Who are we? Why are we doing this?
We were born in Laurel, Delaware along with three brothers. Our family was the victim of a violent crime. Our father and his siblings' lives were forever changed when their parents were brutally murdered in their home in 1961, and their mother was raped. The killer has been incarcerated since 1962. He threatened to murder three other individuals if ever released from prison; our father, our uncle, and a former State Senator. Through this ordeal our family has consistently fought to keep this man locked away for the protection of our family and community. Our father and our brother, Greg, spoke before both Legislative bodies in 2005 opposing HB 31, which was written for the sole purpose of releasing inmates incarcerated prior to 1990. This bill would have released some of Delaware's most violent criminals. This bill passed but was later deemed unconstitutional by The Supreme Court of the State of Delaware.
In spite of never showing any remorse, seventeen times since 1978, the Department of Corrections has approved our grandparent’s murderer’s release into society. Seventeen times we have appeared before the Board of Parole (BOP) to plead our case. Seventeen times the BOP has denied his release. Last year legislation was introduced and passed in the House for the abolishment of the BOP. The current administration has worked for the last two years to dismantle the BOP. We learned about HB 35 one week before it was to be voted on by the Senate. We were told this bill would pass; as it was a done deal. We began to work, to prepare to speak before the Senate. On June 28, 2011, we stood before the Senate in Dover to tell our story and passionately state why Delaware needs a BOP. The Senate heard our story and the votes were cast. In a tumultuous atmosphere within the Senate chambers HB 35 was defeated by one vote. This year the battle continues as the Joint Finance Committee heard testimony in February concerning the BOP budget for fiscal year 2013. Who are we? We are not a coalition, we are not lobbyists’. We are citizens of the State of Delaware who believe, and know that the people can make a difference when they get involved. Why do we do this? We must. Delaware is rapidly changing with the implementation of Federal programs, such as prison reform, education, and green energy. If nothing is done many of our freedoms, along with the endearing charm of Delaware will be lost forever. Please join us as we strive to leave Delaware a better place for future generations.
